Detained PPA Stalwarts Get Bail

An Umuahia High Court  has granted bail to two accused persons, Eme Ndubuisi and Eze Okwuleghe in the sum of N2 Million and two sureties in like sum each.
The duo who are members of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA)  in Abia State have been in detention for five months now and have been standing trial for allegedly sponsoring kidnappers.
Granting bail to the accused persons, Justice T.U. Uzokwe, said one of the sureties must be resident in Abia State and must also be a property owner, adding the original certificate of occupancy should be deposited with the court.
Ruling on the motion for applications of bail for the accused persons filed separately, Justice Uzokwe said there was no pending charge anywhere in any court of competent jurisdiction that warrants keeping them in custody.  The accused persons were first arraigned before a Magistrate Court which lacked jurisdiction over the matter and the Police was asked to remit the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for it to be reassigned, a task, the Police has failed to accomplish, prompting the accused persons to approach the High Court for bail. Justice Uzokwe maintained that under the Human and African Rights Charter, an accused person could not be detained longer than necessary without being charged to court.
A defence Counsel told The Tide clients were charged for sponsoring kidnappers in the state, adding that the charge sheet stated that they sponsored one Ching Chong to kidnap one Cosmo. He said neither the sponsored kidnapper nor the victim volunteered any statement to the police.
