Femi Kuti Gets Another Grammy Nomination
Though it is no longer news that Afro beat Maestro Femi Kuti has been nominated for the 52nd edition of the annual Grammy awards under the “Best Contemporary world music album category for his ‘Day By Day album”, it is important to note that this is his second nomination after the first one in 2003 for his initially acclaimed album, ‘Fight to Win,’ which he lost to Ruben Blade from Mundo.
Fumi 47, and the first son of late Afro beat creator, Fela Anukulapo-Kuti, currently signed to Mercer street records is one of the most remarkable performers from the African continent and has built steady career since forming his positive force band over two decades ago.
It will be on note that Sunny Ade and Femi Kuti are the only indigenous Nigerians to have been nominated for Grammy. Nigerian born artistes who have won the awards in the past are Helen Folasade Adu, who first achieved the success in the 1980s as the front woman and lead vocalist of the popular Brit and Grammy award winning English group, and Seal Henry Olusegun and Olumide Adeola Samuel both of whom are British citizens.
Like his father, Femi has shown a strong commitment to social and political causes throughout his career but he differs from his father in his religious views.
According to the reports on the Grammy awards 2010 list, Beyonce leads with 10 nominations followed by Tator Swift with eight nominations.
