Receiving the South East zonal officers of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Umuahia, Orji pointed out the N10 billion teachers’ salaries bill exceeds by far the N I billion expected to be generated from the administrative charges recently introduced in the schools by government.
The governor told his guests that his immediate preoccupation was to clear the two months salary arrears owed secondary school teachers in the state, promising to use every resource at his disposal to clear the arrears which he said was giving him a lot of headache.
He said that his government has paid adequate attention to the education sector through the introduction of education friendly policies like tuition -free education in primary and secondary schools, free bus schemes for students, among others.
He advised teachers in the state to return to the negotiating table and call off their strike now that the government has accepted to pay them the TSS, emphasising that strike action should be the last resort. In his speech, the Zonal Chairman of ANCOPSS, Mr.Kevin Nwankwo, thanked the governor for investing in the education sector and appealed to him to expedite action in resolving the strike action by teachers in the state. Earlier, the State President of ANCOPSS, Lady Elizabeth Uhuegbu, explained that the principals were in the state for the mandatory continuing professional training programme.
She appealed to the governor to donate a bus to the group for their activities as well as a piece of land for the construction of their secretariat
