DPA Calls For More Fund To Education In Lagos

Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA) has challenged the Lagos State Government to increase funding of education in line with United Nation’s recommendation of 26 per cent of the budget  to education sector.

A statement signed by the party’s Director of Publicity, Mr Felix Oboagwina, lamented that the state spends only N10 billion, which is only 3.5 per cent of the budget for 2009, and blamed the under development of  the sector for the incessant strikes by teachers in the state.

The party said the state government had no reason to renege on its promise of implementing the Teachers Salary Scale (TSS) next year, and advised that there was every need to increase education budget next year.

The statement also wants the budget to concentrate in trimming overcrowding in public schools that record over 120 students per class, saying it was against the United Nation’s recommended pupil-teacher ratio of 1:25.
