Oyo Confirm 300 Cyclists For Maiden Championship
About 300 cyclists from across the nation have been confirmed for the maiden Ajilete Grand Fondo Cycling Championship scheduled for 18th December in Oyo State.
The championship, which will be flagged off from Iseyin and terminate at Ogbomosho, has received royal backing from two prominent traditional rulers in the state.
His Royal Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege 111, Soun of Ogbomosho, and Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola, Adeyeri 111, the Aseyin of Iseyin, gave their blessings when cyclists led by Cycling Federation of Nigeria Board Member Femi Thomas paid them courtesy visits.
Championship initiator Adebayo Majolagbe said the event would promote the sport, keep youths busy and highlight tourist attractions in both towns.
“We believe that this championship apart from helping in promoting the sports is going to help in building a cordial relationship between the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and the two towns,” he said.
Thomas, who also serves as Chairman of Ogun State Cycling Association, promised there would be no dull moment during the championship.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to have this type of event because we believe the cycling federation has been trying in its own capacity to encourage the sports,” he said.
Both monarchs commended the Federation for choosing their communities to host the championship and pledged their support for the event.
They urged the organisers not to relent in moving the sport forward, saying it would help reduce crime and other social vices whilst making youths useful citizens.
The Ajilete Grand Fondo championship is part of activities to celebrate the 2025 edition of the Cradle festival in Ogbomosho.
