NIMASA Partners Police Against Maritime Crimes
In a bid to curb maritime crimes in Nigeria’s waterways, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) says it would collaborate with the Nigeria Police Maritime Command to fight against piracy, smuggling, and other illegal maritime activities threatening the nation’s territorial waters.
Director-General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, stated this during a visit to his office by a delegation led by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Maritime Police Command, Musa Yusuf Garba, in Lagos.
The DG, who emphasised the critical role of inter-agency collaboration in addressing persistent security threats within Nigeria’s maritime environment, said no single institution can win the fight against maritime crime alone.
“Our resolve to combat threats in our waters is stronger when we work together as the maritime domain presents both economic opportunities and security challenges, and it is only through collaboration with law enforcement agencies like the Maritime Police that we can ensure a safe and thriving sector”, Mobereola said.
Earlier, Garba commended the Agency’s leadership for its proactive approach to maritime governance.
He described the visit as a reaffirmation of the Command’s commitment to partnering with NIMASA in securing the nation’s waterways.
“Strengthening institutional cooperation is not just a strategic priority; it is a necessity.
“We will continue to align our operations with NIMASA’s objectives to protect Nigeria’s maritime interests and fulfil our international obligations”, Garba said.
He noted that the parties would enhance intelligence sharing, improve joint enforcement efforts, and support the national push toward a robust Blue Economy.
