Rivers SWAN Condemns Attack On Member

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers Chapter, has condemned in strong terms the attack on one of its members, Chichetam Akawor of Footballrover.com and Elegbetetv.com by the General Manager of Rivers United, Okey Kpalukwu and others on Sunday, 15th October, 2023.
Akawor was assaulted at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Omagwa, Rivers State, after the match day three Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) game between Rivers United and Kwara United.
Akawor who needed treatment as a result of injuries sustained, also had his tripod broken beyond repairs, lost the sum of N1,000 and damaged phone in the process.
Chairman of Rivers SWAN, Sarah David, while reacting to the ugly incident, condemned the attack, insisting that journalists are professionals carrying out their duties as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
She further accused the General Manager of instigating the attack which she said was unacceptable, no matter the perceived crime or offence of the journalist, as such acts are capable of hindering the uninhibited rights of the media to carry out their assignments at match venues.
