MWUN Threatens Strike On Shipping Lines, Today

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) says its work force has resolved to  embark on  industrial action today on shipping lines across the country.
The union said its work force is set to resume its suspended strike action after failed negotiations with shipping companies regarding the Minimum Standard Condition of Service as agreed by the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) in the shipping sector.
President General, MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, stated this in a statement signed by Head of Media, John Ikemefuna.
Adeyanju said the union had resolved to embark on industrial action, which was shelved in June, 2023.
He said by today, 30th October, 2023,  if the lines refuse to meet their demands, MWUN would paralyse maritime activities in the shipping lines.
Adeyanju said when truce was almost in sight, the representatives of the shipping lines saddled with the responsibility of negotiating with the union, “became lackadaisical towards the entire exercise, which gave them away as lacking the mandate to take decisions and their cold feet on the matter subsequently led to the collapse of the negotiations.
“Consequent upon this, MWUN reiterates that the shipping branch of the union will commence the suspended strike action throughout the nation’s ports after the expiration of the renewed seven-day ultimatum issued”.
The union also issued a fresh ultimatum to shipping lines operating in Nigeria over an alleged failure to conclude negotiations on a standard condition of service for their employees.
The strike, Adeyanju said, would be joined by three other branches of the union, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), dockworkers, and seafarers, who are expected to participate fully in the industrial Action.
