The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, may soon regain his freedom if President Bola Tinubu aceeds to a plea for his release.
The governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, yesterday, met behind closed-doors with the President for the release of Kanu at the presidential villa, Abuja.
Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Mbah said he pleaded with the President for Kanu’s release as part of the national healing process, which he said Tinubu has already begun.
The governor expressed the hope that Tinubu would give a favorable consideration to the request for the self-acclaimed leader of IPOB to regain his freedom.
The Enugu governor disclosed that he also appealed for the assistance of the Federal Government to explore the abundant mineral resources in Enugu State for the benefit of the people.
The Federal Government under former President Muhammadu Buhari arrested Kanu on October 14, 2015 on 11-count charge bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony, among others.
Kanu was released from prison on bail on April 28, 2017 on health grounds, but jumped bail and fled abroad.
The Federal Government, however announced his re-arrest and extradition to Nigeria from Kenya on June 29, 2021 after being intercepted in the East African country on Sunday, June 26, 2021 by Interpol. Since then, the self-styled IPOB leader has been behind bars despite several court orders for his release.
