The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, has inaugurated a committee to manage the undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship programmes of the area.
While inaugurating the committee, last Friday, at the Ikwerre Council Secretariat, Isiokpo, Nwanosike noted that the Ikwerre Local Government Committee on Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarship Programmes was approved by the Finance and General Purpose Council (F&GPC) meeting of Ikwerre Local Government Council.
According to him, “For us as a government at the third tier, the F&GPC, which is the highest decision making body, has sat back and has considered the fact that it is important that we create a system that will screen and approve a support system for both undergraduate and postgraduate students that are indigenes and non-indigenes of Ikwerre Local Government, who are living in Ikwerre Local Government to support them acquire proper academic knowledge”.
While saying that the committee was an ad-hoc committee because it was on a trial phase, Nwanosike urged members of the committee to give their best so that it can make meaning for the coming generation.
He noted that the scholarship programme fell on his Back-to-School campaign agenda.
The Ikwerre council chairman stressed that the committee members were to consider and nominate qualified indigenes of Ikwerre Local Government for the award of scholarship for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in higher institutions in Nigeria.
They would also supervise and monitor the success of the programme, he said.
The committee has Dr. Benjamin Odigwe as chairman; the Ikwerre LGA’s Supervisor for Education, Chief Victor Wagor as secretary; and the Ikwerre Legislative Assembly Chairman on Education, Hon. Donald Ogaram as member.
“So, you can see that the council was very deliberate in selecting those who will give the best of service for what we want to achieve for our people”, Nwanosikesaid.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, the Chairman of the committee,Dr. Benjamin Odigwe, thanked Nwanosike for finding them worthy to be members of the committee.
