The Corps Marhall, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, says a total of 3,200 crashes were recorded in 2018 within the months of September, October, November and December.
Oyeyemi disclosed this in his keynote address presented during the FRSC 2019 ‘ember’ months Road Safety Campaign Rally/Flag-Off in Port Harcourt with the theme “Road Safety is a State of Mind, Road Traffic Crash is an Absence of Mind; Stay Alert, Stay Alive.”
Represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer, Zone 6, Port Harcourt, Kingsley Agomoh, the FRSC boss said “out of the 3,200 crashes, 1,829 number of people were killed, involving 23,679 people and 15,501 vehicles.
He said further that within the same period a total number of 134 crashes were recorded in Rivers State with 59 people killed (49 male and 10 female).
This according to him, represent 31.4 per cent increase in RTC cases and 28.3 per cent increase in number of people killed when compared to 2017.”
He said that Rivers State alone recorded over 17,786 unclaimed drivers licence despite all measures put in place, saying that the corps had released lists of unclaimed drivers licence in every local government area in Nigeria to enable them go to their nearest LGA to collect them. He added that the corps had established additional work station for drivers licence in Bonny to make it easy for those in offshore to obtain their driver’s licence.
Oyeyemi said the ember months campaign programme was to create public awareness among drivers and travellers, adding that the focus this year was to appeal to the “minds of road users” with high expectations of a productive outcome.
He commended the state governor, chief Nyesom Wike for the massive road construction in the state and the donation of five brand new patrol vans to FRSC toward ensuring safety and security of live and properties in the state.
