The huge emoluments and allowances of political office holders in Nigeria have been partly blamed to be responsible for the high cost of governance in the nation.
The observation was made by a senior lecturer in the Departmenf of Economics at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Dr. Godwin Nwaeke who urged for a slash in the salaries and allowances of most political office holders, adding that such funds could be diverted into other areas of the economy.
“The current expenditure on salaries and allowances of political office holders is high, for me if it is cut down and invested into other areas of the economy  it will boost revenue,” Nwaeke said.
Commenting further on how to transform the polity, Nwaeke suggested the need to change the value system and attitude of Nigerians towards the nation.
The university don decried high level of corruption, which he said was responsible for the economic woes the country was facing, condemning the lack of patriotism and sacrifice by leaders to transform the nation.
Nwaeke, who commended Rivers State governor, Chief Nyesom Wike  for the infrastructure development in the state, held that it would create room for economic boom.
He advised the governor to give priority to human development policies, explaining that such is capable of  consolidating efforts in transforming the state.
