LG Boss Tasks Women On Healthy Lifestyle
Vice Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Hon. Caroline Ekine, has called on Rivers women, especially those from the local government area to strive to live a healthy lifestyle in their various homes.
Speaking with journalists last Tuesday in Opobo Town shortly after the 2018 August Women Conference the local government boss disclosed that good nutrition is the bedrock of child survival, health and development.
She explained that well-nourished children are able to grow and learn to participate in and contribute to their communities as well as show rescilience to disease, disasters and other global challenges.
Ekine enjoined lactating mothers to observe the six-month exclusive breast feeding for their children as a way of curbing child malnutrition in Nigeria, lamenting the alarming rate of child malnutrition in the nation’s communities.
She noted that through exclusive breast feeding, the menace of child mortality could be drastically reduced.
She asserts: “From the birth to a child’s six months, they are not to be given water, all what they needed as to boost their immune system, is the breast milk”.
Mrs Ekine said that hand washing practice can also reduce the risk of contracting diarrhea and other communicable diseases by 50 per cent.
According to her, “the importance of promoting sanitation and hand washing, rest, balanced diet, exercise and other essential family practices (EFPs) is most needed”.
She pointed out that it is healthier to depend on eating locally produced rice and apples than patronizing foreign foods which had been preserved.
Meanwhile, President of Opobo Women Welfare Association, Ama-Opu-Orubo Felicia Stephen Pepple, has also admonished women to imbibe a healthy lifestyle by ensuring that their immediate environments are kept clean.
