The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP),has urged all politicians in the state to work according to the rules and not to encourage violence in the December 10,2016 rescheduled run legislative elections.
In a statement signed by the Media and Public Relations Adviser, Barry Okpala Mosor, MOSOP warned politicians not to split blood on Ogoni land in pursuit of their political ambitions.
The Movement also insisted that the people would resist any attempt to turn their land into a theatre of war because of any elections.
They further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission( INEC) to provide a level playing ground for all the political parties and their candidates.
It also warned non agents to stay away from the polling booths in Ogoniland during the election
Similarly, the Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO), has also frowned at words of war among politicians and political parties in Rivers State ahead of the re run elections in the state.
Spokesperson of the CLO in Rivers State, Clifford Solomon said recent utterances by politicians are capable of creating tension, bad atmosphere and violence during the election in the state.
According to him, ”the CLO is concerned because of the trends in the polity in the state. We want all political parties to stop words that are capable of creating war and confusion in the state.
” We feel it is necessary to call on both PDP and APC to mind the use of words during their campaigns in order not to heighten the tension in the state. We need peace and all should embrace peace for the development of the state”, he said.
Solomon urged the political parties and their candidates to play by the rules of the INEC rather than speak words that would put fear in the minds of the people during the elections.
According to him,” the candidates should see elections as a sport and not a do or die affair. We are all brothers and Rivers State belongs to all of us.”.
