Association Restates Commitment To Fight Sickle Cell Anaemia
The Association of
Medical Laboratory Technicians and Assistants of Nigeria, (AMELTAN), has re-stated its commitment to providing unique clinical laboratory interventions, preventions and management of sickle cell anemia in the society.
The commitment of the Association to tackling this critical health challenge, according to the National President, Chief Comrade Emmanuel Owurong was in line with United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on health and the African Union/NEPAD health action plan.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the 2016 National Conference of the Association, held at the auditorium of the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, The National President said the theme of the conference, “Effect of Haemoglobinopathy in our Society” was to enhance job effectiveness among laboratory personnels on the endemic of sickle cell anemia.
The president called for the listing of Medical Laboratory Technicians and medical laboratory Assistant as members of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria. He said having representatives of the Association in the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria will avail the body the opportunity to play active roles in their professional development. The president also kicked against the annual registration of members, noting that registration into any professional body is not an annual exercise.
Comrade Owurong also vowed to combat quackery in the profession and stressed the need for training and capacity development among members.
In his remark, the Ag Registrar/CEO of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Mr Tosan Erhabor commended the Association for the successful hosting of the conference, and assured that the issue of annual registration will be looked into when a board is constituted for the council. He also harped on compliance to the e-licensing process to meet up internal best practices.
