Panel To Shortlist, Grill New Nigeria Coach
It has been revealed that a
special panel will now be set up to shortlist and interview the next Nigeria coach.
This was one of the decisions taken at a special meeting in Lagos chaired by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick and attended by vice-presidents Seyi Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko as well as technical committee chieftains Chris Green and Ahmed Yusuf ‘Fresh’.
Top NFF officials have promised to announce a new coach in the week.
It is believed that several notable expatriate coaches have formally applied to succeed Sunday Oliseh, who quit the post in February.
Nigeria is drawn in ‘The Group of Death’ in the qualifying tournament for the 2018 World Cup along with Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia.
They begin their qualifying campaign on October 3 in Zambia.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that NFF technical committee chairman, Chris Green, sensationally stormed out of the meeting chaired by President Amaju Pinnick to decide on a new foreign coach for Nigeria.
The disagreement, Tidesports gathered, had to do with the role Green’s technical committee will play in the selection of the new Nigeria coach.
Green has taken exception to who would be on the committee that will shortlist and then interview the prospective coaches.
A top official disclosed, “Green walked out of the meeting but not without firing warning to the NFF president. They were very choice words.
“It is now left to be seen what will be the way forward in the country’s quest to get started for the World Cup qualifiers in October.”
Another official revealed that the technical committee was sidetracked in the appointment of the last Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.
“They only rubber stamped Oliseh’s appointment,” the official revealed.
Nigeria, without a permanent coach since February, faces a daunting task to qualify for a sixth World Cup after they were drawn in ‘The Group of Death’ qualifying tournament along with Africa’s No.1 ranked team Algeria, nine-time World Cup finalists Cameroon and 2012 African champions Zambia.
