Eleven African
internationals have been relegated from the English Premier League after it was confirmed that Newcastle United and Norwich City join Aston Villa as the three clubs going down a division.
Last Wednesday night’s results saw Sunderland escape the dreaded drop thanks to a fine 3-0 win over Everton, a game in which Ivorian defender Lamine Kone scored twice.
After Sunderland’s win, their bitter rivals Newcastle United were confirmed as relegated after they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa in their penultimate game.
Villa ended bottom with just 17 points from their 37 matches played. Newcastle and Norwich have 34 points from their 37 games while Sunderland are out of danger with 38 points.
Here are the African senior internationals who were relegated:
Aston Villa (3) – Idrissa Gana Gueye (Senegal), Jordan Ayew (Ghana), Rudy Gestede (Benin)
Norwich City (3) – Dieumerci Mbokani (DRC), Sebastien Bassong (Cameroon), Youssouf Mulumbu (DRC)
Newcastle United (5) – Papiss Cisse (Senegal), Chancel Mbemba (DRC), Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast), Henri Saivet (Senegal), Seydou Doumbia (Ivory Coast).
