Inadequate Teachers, Tools, Bane Of Education

Lack of adequate
teachers and necessary equipment have been identified to be major challenges faced by most secondary schools currently involved in the on-going Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State.
Out of about eight schools The Tide visited, only one, a privately-owned school had what could at best go for a substandard laboratory, while others could only boast of make-shift laboratories.
All the six government owned schools visited in the area have serious cases of dilapidation in all spheres, including lack of desks, staff office, staff quarters, hostel accommodation, laboratories, etc.
Of all the schools however, namely Government Secondary School, Omerelu, Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Apani,  Community Secondary School,Elele, OKEH Memorial Comprehensive Secondary  School, Elele, Government Secondary School, Isiokpo, Model Girls Secondary School Isiokpo, Anglican Secondary School, Isiokpo and Government  Army Secondary School, Elele, the situation is worst in government secondary Schoo, Omerelu.
At GSS, Omerelu, some of the classrooms have been deroofed and what is used as laboratories could at best be shanty.
Although no school authority in this school spoke to The Tide, a concerned chief of Omerelu, Chief David Enyinda, leader of Omuoparaoga community where the school is sited painted a pitiable scenario on the plight of the school.
According to him, at GSS, Omerelu, there are no security and no enough teachers to handle some key subjects.
“The few teachers in this our school are trying but they cannot do everything that is required to build a standard school. Sometimes they even get tired of even teaching in areas they are not specialists because there are no teachers.
“We as  a community, we are pleading to government to please come to our aid.  For years we’ve been hearing that government has been building secondary schools everywhere in Rivers State, but you can see for yourselves that they did not think we exist. Government should please remember us”, he stated.
