Stakeholder Tasks NURTW On Members’ Activities
The National Union of
Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has been called upon to review its membership and the activities of the members across the country.
A stakeholder in road transport business, Chief Folarunsho Oshodi, made the call in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt over the weekend.
Oshodi said the call became imperative following the union’s inconsistency and dereliction of functions.
He disclosed that activities of the union in some parts of the country including Rivers State ought to be reviewed to be in line with international best practice, rather than the ‘Agbero’ life as practised in Nigeria.
According to him, transport unions in other parts of the country are well organised with their functions well spelt out, unlike in Nigeria, where all manner of people were allegedly recruited as members or taskforce to embarrass and intimidate law abiding commercial drivers on the road.
The stakeholder noted that the review would help instill discipline and order among members as any member that is found culpable of lawlessness should be shown the way out, no matter how highly placed, in order to serve as deterrent to others.
He further noted that it is disheartening that some officials have placed themselves as demi gods in a particular post when elected, that whenever attempts were made to replace such persons, heads must role, parallel unions would be inaugurated and sometimes leading to destruction of lives and property.
Oshodi said member’s satisfactory work conduct and good manners should be paramount in oder for members not to drag the name of the union on the roads.
He opined that the Union should set a standard for members who are dedicated, hardworking and transparent in their activities so as to encourage others, while those who are committed and loyal should also be rewarded.
“I call on the members of the Union nationwide to be law abiding, create conductive environment for all road users, review their operational guidelines, and make meaningful contribution to the progress of the union and Nigeria ”, Oshodi posited.
The stakeholder also appealed for cooperation among members, solidarity and understanding in order to further move the union forward for better service delivery of their members.
