Disturbed by the inces
sant squabbles in the mainstream political parties in Anambra State, many politicians from various political parties in the state have made moves to join Hope Democratic Party (HDP).
The politicians, under a coalition from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressive Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP) and Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), held a stakeholders’ steering meeting in Awka recently.
They regretted the leadership squabbles in the various political parties in the past 16 years and the false impression that the people of Anambra could not organise themselves politically.
Chief Osita Oraegbunam was appointed the interim chairman of the group to, among other things, “make HDP a party that will rekindle hope in democratic processes in Anambra’’.
He is also to ensure that the ideal of one man one vote guides party decisions.
Oraegbunam told newsmen shortly after the meeting that he had accepted the responsibility with humility.
He said that he would adhere to the four-point mandate given to him by the stakeholders to make HDP a real party of the masses in the state.
Oraegbunam said he had always believed in an ideal grassroots and masses oriented political party, adding that he would faithfully implement the directives of the stakeholders.
“Those who will emerge as members of the executive committees from the wards to the state will not aspire for any elective or accept appointive positions before the expiration of their tenure.
“No candidate for any election should be predetermined and discipline must remain a cardinal point in the membership of the party,” he said.
According to him, his appointment has been ratified by the HDP National Chairman, Mr Ejiro Moses.
Oraegbunam, a former chairman of LP in the state, said that attempts by a few individuals or money bags to hijack leadership of political structures had been the cause of squabbles in political parties in the state
“Only by upholding the virtues of transparency and inclusiveness could political disharmony be avoided,’’ he said.
