The Controller of Prisons in
Enugu State, Mr Aloysius Uchenwa, has said that the ongoing strike by judiciary workers had delayed the trial of prison inmates in the state.
Uchenwa made the observation in Enugu while decorating 150 officers of the Nigeria Prisons Service promoted to different grades.
The controller said that many of the prisons in the state were congested as the number of inmates had increased drastically.
“We are seriously affected by the ongoing strike and we wish that the problem between the union and the government will soon be over.
“As the strike continues, the number of inmates increases but if the courts are in session, some of the inmates would have known their fate.
“But the prison is getting congested and it is not healthy for the inmates,” he said.
He appealed to the Federal Government to look into the dispute in the interest of the prisoners.
The controller congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to justify their promotion by improving their productivity.
Uchenwa said that the number of promoted officers in the state had increased to 2,000 in the past two years since he assumed office.
“I feel honoured that I have been able to achieve a lot, especially in the promotion of some officers who have for long not been promoted.
“As I have played my part, it is now left for them to reciprocate their promotion by living up to the expectations,” he said.
Some of the promoted officers who spoke with newsmen expressed delight that their prayers had been answered.
A chief superintendent of prisons, Mr Chijioke Oguejiofor, attributed the promotion to God’s will and promised to do his best to justify it.
Another promoted officer, Mr Akam Fred, who was promoted to deputy controller of prisons, said that he had worked for 20 years before the promotion.
He attributed his promotion to diligence and urged Nigerians to remain focused and believe in God whom all promotions came from.
