NUJ Lauds Amaechi, Semenitari Over New Press Centre
The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has thanked the outgoing state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, for donating a fully—furnished modern press centre to journalists in Rivers State.
The Acting Chairman of the NUJ in Rivers State, Dr Alpheaus Paul-Worika, said the commissioning of the press centre symbolizes a new beginning and a beautiful relationship between the press and the government as we enter a new democratic dispensation.
Paul-Worika said, Rivers State occupies a special place in the history of journalism practice in Nigeria, dating back to the era of Ernest Ikoli in whose honour the press centre is named, and assured that journalists would continue to perform their constitutional duties as watchdogs of the society.
The acting chairman commended the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, for her efforts in the completion of the state-of-the-art press centre, noting that under her administration, journalists in Rivers State have enjoyed tremendous support from government.
He said the union has resolved to put the new press centre to good and use, and encourage activities that would promote healthy and robust journalism practice in Rivers State, adding that the NUJ was looking forward to greater understanding in the task to make Nigeria better for the common good of the citizenry.
He also thanked the immediate past leadership of the NUJ led by Mr Opaka Dokubo for their dogged commitment to the actualization of the project, noting that the press centre will be a testimonial to their services and achievements for our union.
It would be recalled that the outgoing Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi had Wednesday, commissioned the project valued at about N365million, and took about 24 months to complete.
