Nitel Sales: PH Subscribers Bemoan FG’s Decision
Reaction have trailed Fed
eral Government’s decision to handover Nigeria Telecommunication Company (NITEL) to a private company.
Subscribers in Port Harcourt in an interview with The Tide on Monday said the decision was reached in a hurry and should be revisited.
They argued that the Federal Government ought to have considered re-deploying the staff to other areas before considering the hand over project.
Chief Evans Ejinmah, argued that there was a high need to reactivate the Government owned Telecommunication Company than to privatize it.
He explained that NITEL was meant to operate a low tariff system in order to cushion the effect of high subscription from the private telecommunication companies.
Ejinmah, reiterated the need for the Federal Government to own a functional telecom outfit, if it is sincere about its plans to alleviate the plight of the masses.
Another subscriber, Faith Wome, said the government should reabsorb all NITEL staff in the Ministry of Communication Technology.
She said it was inhumane to expose the worker to hardship due to the sales of their place of work.
Wome who wondered the sincerity in the privatisation exercise, charged the authority to be bold and inform Nigerians of their motives for the transaction.
Meanwhile, NITEL staff in Port Harcourt, have called on the government to pay all their entitlements and allowances, saying they are not in support of the privatisation.
