The Association of Local Government of Nigeria(ALGON) Rivers State chapter says it will resist any intimidation by the opposition or security agencies during the elections.
The State Chairman of ALGON and Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Hon. Orji Ngofa, with other 22 council chairmen at a press conference ahead Saturday’s presidential elections said such resistance would be within the ambit of the law.
“We will resist any intimidation within the ambit of the law. We want to tell the whole world and our supporters that they should not be intimidated, “ Ngofa stressed.
The ALGON chairman while lamenting the continuous harassment and intimidation of its members by the opposition and security agencies, reasoned that the ploy was to weaken their resolve to vote for the All Progressives Congress(APC).
He lamented that the state and local governments have been on the receiving end after dumping the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) two years ago .
“The politics in this state for almost three years is oppression, but we will resist them on Saturday to show them we are not happy with them.”
Chairmen of both Asari-Toru and Omuma re-echoed Ngofa’s view.
Chairman of Asari Toru,Hon. Ojukaye Flagg-Amachree stated that for the past one month he has been receiving strange phone calls from security men to report to the police, but said he will not respect such invitations as far as they are not made official.
For Caretaker Committee Chairman of Omuma, Kelechi Nwogu, ALGON members have pitched their tent with the APC and cannot be intimidated, “
“No amount of dictatorship will deter us from that…Nobody can take away our right of belonging to the APC,” he added.
CTC Chairman of Gokana, Kadilo Kabari lamented that the people of the area were now under siege from heavy presence of police,
“ what is happening in Gokana now is a mark of desperation. As am talking now, B-Dere, Nweol, Kpor and Bodo are under siege. Members of the APC are being intimidated and only yesterday the council secretariat was also besieged.”
