The Rivers State Government has opened the one-storey, 20-classroom block for academic activities.
The construction of 20-classroom block was necessitated by the need to address the issue of out-of-school children in the state.
In a statement in Port Harcourt, at the weekend, the state Ministry of Education explained that the state government embarked on the project to ensure that every child has easy access to education.
According to the statement, “the project is in line with the Education-For-All (EFA) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) vision of providing access to all children of school age by the year 2015.
The Commissioner for Education, Rivers State, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi while moving pupils to the new 20-classroom block at the Model Primary School, Elekahia, Port Harcourt, stated that the new structure will accommodate more pupils than the 14 classroom block.
She noted that the one-storey structure has a capacity of 600 unlike the 14-classroom block that has a capacity of 390.
The commissioner hinted that more pupils will now have access to the free education policy of the current administration of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
The ministry recalled that since the declaration of State of Emergency in the education sector by Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in 2008, the sector has witness total turnaround from decay to decorum.
It added that the decorum in the education sector has necessitated a surge in admissions into public schools in Rivers State a situation that prompted the construction of 20-classroom block across the State.
The 20-classroom block is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities like demonstration science laboratory, library, ICT, sick bays, reception class, the statement noted.
It would be recalled that the introduction of the science laboratory is in line with the new national curriculum which allows children between four and above to be exposed to science education early so as to have better understanding of science courses in the future.
The demonstration class is where the teacher demonstrates for the pupils what they are learning. It makes teaching and learning easier for the teacher and the pupils.
The Head Teacher of State School, Elekahia, Mrs Ifeyinwa Ofoni said Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has done enough for the children of Rivers State, adding that the facilities at the 20-classroom block will aid teaching and learning.
Some of the pupils praised the state government for providing a conducive environment for learning for them.
They said that the new facilities will make learning interesting for them.
