F’ Eagles Lead Super 4

Flying Eagles now top the pre-season Super 4 with six points after they defeated Nigeria champions, Kano Pillars 2-1 on Monday.
Pillars, Enyimba and Nigeria U23 have three points apiece.
Both Flying Eagles and Pillars played well and created chances, but both goalkeepers, Theophilus Afelokhai (Pillars) and Olorunleke Ojo (Flying Eagles), pulled off some good saves.
Flying Eagles opened the scoring through Suleiman Abdullahi, who pounced on Kalmar FC striker Taiwo Awoniyi’s cross in the 22nd minute to beat Afelokahi in Pillars goal.
Pillars equalised in the 32nd minute when flying Eagles captain Musa Mohammed headed home an own goal while trying to make a back pass to Olorunleke.
Two minutes later, Taiwo Awoniyi restored the lead for the Nigeria U20 side with a superb strike after he cut inside his marker and picked a spot to beat Afelokhai.
Theophilus Afelokhai denied Flying Eagles another goal as he saved the penalty kick by Chidera Eze and the rebound from Musa Mohammed in the 64th minute after Afelokhai had upended Wasiu Jimoh.
The Flying Eagles did most of the attacking with Afelokhai pushing away a curling free kick by Jimoh after just five minutes and by the first quarter, Ifeanyi Matthew’s cross begged for connection inside the Pillars box.
Reuben Ogbonnaya then made a timely tackle to deny Awoniyi an attempt at goal in the 26th minute.
Flying Eagles goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke ran out in time to clear a dangerous ball in the 55th minute before Christian Obiozor could connect.
Three minutes later, Gambo Mohammed’s left-footed strike was gathered by Flying Eagles goalkeeper Ojo, before Awoniyi had his 66th minute solo effort blocked by Pillars defence.
Injured Prince Izu Omego was taken to the hospital and Roland Silas replaced him in the 82nd minute.
The Flying Eagles goalkeeper denied Pillars an equaliser when he saved Abdul Haruna’s header off Samuel Tswanya’s cross in the 84th minute and three minutes later, Isaac Loute wiped a cross into Flying Eagles box but rolled harmlessly across the goal post.
