The Nigerian Guild of Editors has called for review of the nation’s security architecture to check the spate of insurgency, especially in the North East Zone of Nigeria.
The Guild, which stated this in a communiqué at the end of its last quarterly meeting for 2014 in Lagos, also said that the crises in the North East have emphasised the need for concerted efforts, including change of tactics by the military to combat the problem.
The communiqué, signed by the guild’s President, Femi Adesina, also advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised in this year’s general elections.
According to the communiqué, “Editors advise the political class, security agents and the populace to be cautious in their utterances, abide by the rules of campaigning and exhibit tolerance before and during the elections to avoid over-heating the polity”.
The Guild noted with concern, the sudden fall in global oil prices, noting that the situation should serve as a wakeup calls on the Federal Government to go beyond rhetoric by developing economic policies and measures to diversify the economy.
It also urged the federal and other arms of governments to take drastic actions to reduce the huge cost of governance, particularly in the face of recently announced austerity measures.
The Guild also lamented the high failures in the November/December WAEC examinations, and called for more allocation of funds to the education sector.
