The police in Ebonyi
have arrested 12 persons, including a youth leader, for allegedly attacking the residence of a factional speaker of the state assembly, Chief Chukwuma Nwazunku.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Chris Anyanwu, announced the arrest in Abakaliki on Wednesday while addressing newsmen.
“We received information on Monday that a group of people stormed the speaker’s official residence and destroyed the property inside the premises.
“The state police commissioner instructed our officers to storm the scene and they came back with some suspects, including the youth assembly’s president.
“When they were brought here, they said the men stormed the residence, demanded for the keys of cars parked in the premises before destroying properties at the back of the building.
“We discovered that they looked ruffled, as their clothes were torn while they claimed that the attackers collected their phones and wallets containing identity cards and voters’ cards, among others,” he said.
Anyanwu said the command had commenced full investigation into the matter, adding that the suspects would be prosecuted.
“The officers investigating the case are free to conduct a search on the suspects’ residences if it is necessary, as the case would be tried in the state and not outside if it eventually gets to the court.
Nwazunku was not inside the premises at the time of the attack, as he was said to be in Abuja for the declaration of President Goodluck Jonathan to contest for a second term in office.
