As the yuletide period is
fast approaching, a member of the Federal Road  Safety Corp (FRSC) in Rivers State, has enjoined  road marshals to be more committed and dedicated to the challenges of making the nation’s roads safer before, during and after the period.
The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of FRSC, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, made the call at the 2014 Special Marshal Sectoral Workshop held in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Oyeyemi, who was represented by the Assistant Corp Marshal, Zonal Command Office, Zone 6, Port Harcourt, Mr Aliyu Gummi, said the workshop with its theme, “Improved Regulatory and Enforcement Capacity in Federal Road Safety Corp, Way Forward in Road Transport Control and Fatality Reduction”, said it was aimed at enabling the Special Marshals and other stakeholders in road safety the opportunity to critically look into the road traffic rules and regulations.
He said they would also reflect and analyse issues of enforcement within the context of the on-going efforts to reduce the rate of fatality and road crashes in the country, and advised the Marshals to put into practice what they had learnt in the workshop to make the roads safe at all times.
Also speaking, the FRSC Sector Commander in Rivers State, Sunday Oghenekaro, said the Special Marshals have brought a refreshingly new meaning into volunteering for the benefit of humanity in the promotion of road safety.
In his speech, the state Coordinator of Special Marshals and Partnership, Dr John Ugbebor reiterated that the recruitment of the new Special Marshals would enhance the of operations of the outfit to perform better in assisting the command and enjoined them to take their service seriously with utmost dedication  and commitment.
The occasion featured induction of new Special Marshals.
Meanwhile, the Sector Commander FRSC, Rivers State Command, Sunday Oghenekaro has commended the Nigeria Breweries for their effort in road safety public enlightenment.
Oghenekaro made the commendation at the don’t drink and drive public enlightement campaign held in collaboration with the Nigeria Breweries at Mile 3 Motor Park, Diobu, Port Harcourt recently.
According to him, the campaign would go a long way in shoring-up the FRSC efforts at keeping the roads safe for all road users during the ember month period and beyond, as alcohol and drugs mostly gave an individual or driver false sense of confidence to act abnormally, stressing that the position of the traffic law is also clear on combing drinking and driving.
Regulation 174(1) for instance provides that no person shall drive a vehicle or occupy the driver’s seat of any vehicle on a public road while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or a drug having narcotic effect while the engine is running, whereas paragraph 2 of the same regulation provides that, any person who acts in contravention of sub-regulation (1) of these regulations commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of N5,000 or a term of 1” year imprisonment or both, he opined.
The state corps commander said the enlightenment would draw the attention of the public on the dangers of drink and drive on our roads, and charged  road users to appreciate the fact of “one man one life”, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility, it depends on you.
