The Managing Director of the company, Mr Robert Dickerman, stated this during a customer consultative forum in Abakaliki.
He said that the company had commenced the inventory of its faulty facilities, especially transformers, in the area with a view to fixing or replacing them.
Dickerman appealed to customers in the state to exercise patience, assuring that the company would take steps to remedy the situation.
He said that the company had identified 49 faulty transformers in Abakaliki and had received no fewer than 300 applications from electricity consumers for replacement or installation of transformers.
“We are carrying out household enumeration in Ebonyi to enable us determine and strategise on how best to install the smart meter system which we have adopted.
”The smart meter is preferable to avoid illegal connections and theft. This system will also eliminate the crazy bill regime,” he said.
Dickerman disclosed that electricity consumers across the country would experience a sharp increase in tariff.
“This development will be experienced in all states of the federation,” he said.
He appealed to the consumers to pay their bills promptly to enable the company serve them better.
“EEDC is facing a serious challenge of vandalism and stealing of our expensive cables and other vital facilities and this development appears to be notorious in the South-East”, he said.
The Acting General Manager, Operation and Maintenance in the company, Mr Tony Ebodaghe, said that EEDC had recorded successes in its efforts to improve on service delivery.
“We have made some modest improvements in our services, purchased some transformers while energy supply has been steady for sometime in the past one year.
”Statistics show that we had 9,053 megawatts of electricity in June but it dropped to 8,000 in August.
The figure rose to 11,996 megawatts in September and 13,588 megawatts in October”, he said.
“We share in the pains of our consumers in the Afikpo area who have been under blackout following the loss of 48 poles caused by a recent downpour,” he added.
