The Minister of Edu
cation, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has told the alumni association of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to assist in the effort to promote the quality of education in their alma mater.
Skekarau made the call when a delegation from the association paid him a courtesy call in Abuja recently.
He pledged to continue to support the association in whatever capacity he could.
“I appreciate your efforts at making sure that the standard you passed through is maintained.
“Education is key to development and no nation can rise above the quality of its education system,” he said.
The minister said that his administration would attach much importance to boosting the capacity of teachers.
He said the ministry was working toward organising a National Teachers Summit to drive home the value of teachers.
The National President of the association, Mr Andrew Oru, who led the delegation, congratulated Shekarau for his appointment.
He urged the minister to be guided by due process and to ensure that all actions to be taken were propelled by adequate consultation with relevant stakeholders.
Oru appealed for a permanent representation of the association at the level of governing council of the university.
“Sir, given the clear understanding of what an alumni association stands for in the survival of an institution worldwide; it is not only a necessity but imperative that a permanent seat be reserved for it at the level of the governing council.
“This, to our understanding, does not require further legislation but simply an executive action from your exalted office.
“We urge you to exercise your discretion in the circumstances to issue the appropriate directives,” he said.
