The Independent Petroleum
Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) in Anambra on Friday suspended its three-day old strike. This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of the meeting between the marketers and the Anambra government.
Petroleum marketers in the state had embarked on a warning strike on Wednesday, to protest alleged government high-handedness.
Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano told newsmen after the meeting that issues were amicably resolved and he described the meeting as successful.
In her remarks, the Senior Special Adviser to Obiano on Oil and Gas, Mrs Ngozi Okoye, said the dispute by the marketers was not because government was harsh on them but because they wanted to protect some of their members, who were subverting the process.
Okoye assured the marketers that the genuine ones among them would not have problem but that government would not allow them to rip-off the unsuspecting public.
She said, “I want to correct that impression that government was harsh on them. Before now, we have been meeting with them to enable us to correct the anomalies and streamline their operations in the downstream sector, because we have been receiving complaints of underdispensing and overpricing.”
“Based on these reports, we carried out on-the-spot checks on about 22 filling stations and 16 of them were guilty of the allegations and government ordered them to shutdown, until they corrected the anomalies, so they decided to protest. “In terms of tax and levies, the government will streamline them because the marketers raised the issue of multiple taxation; we shall come up with official remittances expected from them, she added.
Public Relations Officer of IPMAN, Enugu Depot, Chief Ugwu Nworah,  said the meeting ended with a resolution which was acceptable to both parties.
