Group Opposes ALGON President’s Senate Bid
The Enugu East Forum
(EEF), an association of professionals and residents in Enugu East Senatorial district of Enugu State recently expressed reservations over the declaration for Senate by the National President of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Mr. Nwabueze Okafor.
The body said that Okafor, a former chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area fell below the standard required by any aspirant to represent an upward constituency as the Enugu East Senatorial district.
The group made the rejection when it met to review the activities culminating to the 2015 general elections in Enugu State.
Chairman of the Forum, Elder Edmund Anike, said the forum was formed among other things, to contribute in strengthening democracy in Enugu East Senatorial district, adding that allowing people like Nwabueze Okafor to continue parading themselves as aspirants for such exalted position without anybody or group telling him straight to face of his real worth, would amount to disservice to democracy and the good people of Enugu East Senatorial district.
In a swift reaction, however, Okafor dismissed the EEF position as laughable, noting that he remained eminently qualified for any position having served as chairman of a council and rose to the position of ALGON presidency in the country.
But, Anike said that for the mere fact that Okafor found himself as ALGON President was not enough for him to seek for the position once occupied by a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani and former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo.
The position is presently being occupied by a former Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives and now chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications, Senator Gil Nnaji.
The EEF chairman said: “We are concerned about the disturbing news of Okafor declaring for senate. That is the level the Nigeria polity has degenerated to.
“For the interest of those who don’t know him, Nwabueze Okafor is that National President of ALGON who subverted and manipulated ALGON presidency to personal conveniences. He is recorded to have amended the constitution of ALGON as many times as it suited him within a record time of two years just to legalise his cling to the ALGON presidency even when he was no longer a local government chairman”.
