Anxiety looms in Enugu
State over the directive from Federal Government to Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, to reopen schools next Monday as the union executive members are insisting that there would be no resumption until they got clearance from the national body for a go-ahead and necessary precautionary measures put in place.
Schools nationwide had been shut, following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, prompting the Federal Government’s decision to postpone the resumption date as a measure of preventing possible spread of the virus.
But Enugu State government has assured residents, especially parents and students, of its preparedness to ensure that measures necessary to ward off the dreaded disease were in place.
Speaking to newsmen in his office yesterday, Commissioner for Health, Dr. George Eze, said: “As a ministry, we have been invited to come and train them on how to get around with the disease, raise index on suspicion, to stall any suspected case of Ebola. So, we will show them the gadgets needed for this like the thermometers, personal hygiene techniques   etc.
“It is now left for the Education Ministry to make efforts to ensure that our advice, equipment and training are put to use. We, in the Ministry of Health are ready to collaborate with Education Ministry. We have been proactive in the State.
“You must have heard about how we reacted swiftly to isolate the suspected Ebola incident in the state. It would have been a disaster if we did not within six hours isolate the case that came to Enugu. That shows you that we are very proactive. Our index for suspicion has been activated to a high level.”
