33,000 Cases Pending In Anambra High Courts
A total of 33, 161 cases
are pending in the High Courts of Anambra State as at June, 2014, the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Peter Umeadi, has said.
The chief judge, who gave the figures during a special court session to mark the commencement of the 2014/2015 legal year, said that of the number, 1, 882 were criminal cases; 23,146, civil cases and 8,133, motions.
The figure is 3,000 higher than that of the corresponding period of last year, which stood at 30,231.
For the Magistrate Courts, there are 25,130 pending cases.
Worried by the development, he said the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, had approved the appointment of eight new judges and massive infrastructure development of the judiciary in the three senatorial zones of the state to enhance quick dispensation of justice.
According to him, three high court complexes with six court rooms and judge’s quarters are being constructed at Ekwulobia, Ihiala and Otuocha, while 14 Magistrate Courts are to be constructed in various parts of the state.
Similarly, he said the construction of the new four-storey building judiciary headquarters in Awka was progressing rapidly, adding that it was the tallest building in the new three arms zone being developed in the Anambra State capital.
He commended the executive arm of government for involving the judiciary in the design and construction of the complex.
