Transporter Expresses Worry Over Indiscriminate Parking, Illegal Parks
A Transporter in Rivers
State, Elder Steve Anunobi has expressed worry over the indiscriminate parking of vehicles along major roads and operation of illegal motor parks in the state.
Anunobi, who barred his mind in a chat with The Tide correspondent in Port Harcourt on Monday said the situation had become a source of worry as they cause traffic gridlock and embarrassment to other road users.
He lamented that the worst of all was that some times, illegal parks and indiscriminate parking’s were aided by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) after some financial inducement, and called on the Rivers State Government and other relevant authorities to without delay wade into the ugly trend to safe motoring in the state from the activities of the touts.
According to him, government and other authorities should go round the state and demolish such parks and arrest the hoodlums and those behind the establishment.
Anunobi noted that the traffic gridlock could be averted if those illegal parks and indiscriminate parking on the road were well checked or given a place, as they are causing a great challenge in the city of Port Harcourt and its environs.
He also condemned the activities of some hoodlums who operate in the name of taskforces that impounds vehicles to obscure destination and extort huge sums of money from the Innocent driver, thereby making life unbearable for mostly commercial drivers, saying that they should also be checked.
Annuobi, who plys from Boro Park to Rumuola however hinted that the touts had become public nuisance and called for government intervention.
It would be recalled that the 13Th NOA round table conference with stakeholders on Transport held in Port Harcourt called for a realistic and effective traffic management in Port Harcourt and its environs, and it condemned proliferation of traffic taskforces which had given rise to intimidation and extortion of money from motorists by touts and illegal taskforce. Unauthorised parking by motorists, especially at road intersections, impersonation of TIMARIV, Loading of inter-state commuter vehicles on the roadsides and poor road network among others are issues government and the authorities should address in the state.
