Any substance con
sumed with an intention to provide nutritional support for the body is considered as food. It is usually of plant or animal origin and contains essential nutrients that serve as catalysts for healthy growth.
These essential nutrients comes in the forms of carbohydrates, fats, proteins vitamins and minerals. They serve mainly to give the body the needed energy, maintain life and stimulate development of the body.
Seeds of plants are a good source of food for animals and humans. This is mainly because they contain the nutrient necessary for the plants initial growth, including many healthy fats, such as omega fats. Infact, the majority of foods consumed by humans are mainly seed-based. Edible seeds include: beans, peas, maize, wheat, rice and nuts. Oil seeds are often pressed to produce rich oils.
Seeds are typically high in unsaturated fats and in moderation, are considered a healthy food. However, not all seeds are edible. Large seeds such as those from lemon pose a choking hazard, while seeds from cherries and apples contain cyanide which could be poisonous only if consumed in large volumes.
Fruits, which are the riped ovaries of plants also make up a significant part of the diets of many cultures. Some botanical fruits, such as tomatoes, pumpkins, and eggplants, are eaten as vegetables. Vegetables are a second type of plant matter, commonly eaten as food. These include, root-vegetable (potatoes and carrots), bulbs (onion family), leaf vegetable (spinach and lettuce), stem vegetable (bamboo shoots and asparagus) and other vegetables such as cabbage or cauliflower.
Apart from plants as a good source of food, animals also constitute a veritable source of food. Animals are used as food either directly or indirectly by the product they produce. Meat is an example of a direct product taken from animal.
Other foods from animals include, milk. In addition, births and other animals lay eggs which are often rated as a good source of protein and bees produce honey, a popular sweetener in many cultures etc.
Some cultures and people do not consume meat or animal food products for cultural, dietary, health, ethical or ideological reasons. Vegetarians choose to forgo food from animal sources to varying degrees. Vegetarians do not take in any foods that contain ingredients from an animal source.
However, apart from filling one’s bowel with edibles as a means of giving support to the body skeleton, priority must be placed on foods that are capable of carrying out some life-sustaining chemical transformation within the cells of the consumer. This is important because these enzyme-catalysed reactions allow organisms to grow and produce, maintain their structures and respond to their environments. By extention, foods that facilitate quick digestion are very good to the body.
