A shipping magnate, Mr Ifeanyi Asogwa, has said that  the development of tourism in the creeks and coastal areas would boost Nigeria’s economy.
Asogwa, the Managing Director of Moses Freights Ltd, Port Harcourt, made the assertion in an interview with our Correspondent  in Port Harcourt.
He noted that Nigeria’s over concentration on oil was inimical to the economy and had encouraged lack of economic creativity.
“Go round Nigerian coastal areas, or while moving from Lagos to Port Harcourt, you will see the serene movement of our rivers.
“Look at Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, nobody is talking about oil again because they have used their oil money to develop the country’s tourism industry,” he said.
Asogwa said Nigeria was a country blessed with abundant human and natural resources that needed to be explored.
He explained that economic diversification was imperative for Nigeria to meet up with the economic best practices as in the other climes of the world.
Asogwa recalled that the Nigerian economy was buoyant even before the exploration of oil, saying it was time to harness other natural endowments.
He called for economic innovations aimed at repositioning the economy to its pride of place.
He expressed confidence in the responsiveness of President Goodluck Jonathan’s led-government to put Nigeria on the path of glory.
According to him, the president has good intentions for the country and urged all to support him.
