The new Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Council, Dr Lawrence Chuku has vowed to take over the property of the council, including the council secretariat and return it to the people.
Dr Chuku, who stated this last Saturday shortly after he was screened by the Rivers State House of Assembly said nobody, including the sacked Chairman, Mr Timothy Nsirim, would stop him or prevent him from taking possession of government property belonging to the council.
He said the law does not permit two local government chairmen at a time, stating that since he has been sworn in  he would take over everything that belongs to the council including the council headquarters.
According to him, ‘’ I am aware that some people are either ignorant of the law or are driven by some kind of ambitions that are neither here or there, but for me, we cannot have two local government chairmen at a time.
‘’ My Local Government, Obio/Akpor for years, appeared to have been privatized, my major task is to return the local government area to the people’’ , he said.
He regretted that for  some years now, bursary and scholarship were dead, adding that there was no encouragement to students and promised to resuscite bursary and scholarship awards to students.
Chukwu also promised to wipe out revenue touts and ensure decency in revenue collections.
He said the council would consult the state in revenue collection to ensure discipline in that regard.
‘’ We recently observed that communities are balkanised as against our tradition. I am from Woji community,no matter the problems, the community cannot be split into two or three. Woji is a traditional community and not a political community. We shall ensure that politicians leave our communities alone and face their politics’’ , he said.
Also speaking after being screened, the Caretaker Chairman of Port Harcourt Local Government area, Mr Charles Paul Ejekwu, promised to ensure the growth of the grassroots as well as reach out to all for better development.
Others who spoke to our Assembly correspondent include, Hon Charles Anyanwu, Dame Maureen Tamuno, and Chibuike Ikenga. They  all pledged to ensure development in their various local government areas.
