The Abia State Govern
ment has distributed 1,778 laptop computers to 216 secondary schools as part of its efforts to boost computer education in the state.
Governor Theodore Orji said in Umuahia last Tuesday, while handing over the laptops to the benefiting schools that they were being provided in addition to the 300 earlier given out.
Orji said that the laptops, which were purchased from the Independent National Electoral Commission, were meant to equip the students to become Information Communication Technology (ICT) compliant.
He gave the assurance that the government would provide the necessary environment for the growth of science and technology in the school system.
He promised that government would build more classroom blocks and equip them, while also sustaining the training of teachers.
Orji said that government was restructuring the technical colleges in Aba and Ohafia to enable the students discharge their mandate creditably.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr Monica Philips, said that the state started the training of teachers in computer education in September 2013.
The Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Education, Chief Darlington Nwokocha, said that the governor’s support to the growth of education had yielded positive result.
He said that the computer sets would help the students to compete favourably in local and international competitions.
