The Corps Marshal, Fed
eral Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Osita Chidoka, has expressed concern over the declining leadership quality of some of the commission’s field officers.
Chidoka, who spoke at a one-day retreat for 36 sector and zonal commanders, charged the officers to rededicate themselves to the mandate of the commission.
He said that leadership was not about wearing ranks and issuing commands, but representing the vision of the organisation.
“A leader’s job is to put the right people in the right place to fulfill a vision.’’
Chidoka urged the officers to provide good leadership in their areas of jurisdiction by carrying their subordinates along to achieve the mandate of the organisation.
“The culture of excellence must be embedded in the FRSC; therefore, you must monitor your personnel, engage them and measure their performance.
“The people (personnel) are the most important asset of an organisation; you cannot be a good leader without monitoring and measuring their performance,’’ he said.
In his reaction,  Zonal Commander in Charge of Benin, Mr Charles Akpabio, described Chidoka’s presentation as a “tonic’’ that would ginger the officers to do more.
Zonal Commander, Kaduna, Mr Charles Theophilus, pledged to carry his personnel along to step up enforcement of traffic rules.
“From what we have heard today, we need to go back and work harder. We need to carry our men along, enhance our operation and draw up strategy to achieve more,’’ he said.
Our correspondent  reports that the theme of the retreat was: “Strategic Thinking for Improved Supervision, Regulation and Enforcement Capacity’’.
