Association Constitutes Taskforce On Security
The Abakaliki Main Mar
ket Traders Association has constituted two task force groups to ensure security and free flow of traffic in the market.
The Chairman of the association, Mr Emeka Nwome, told newsmen in Abakaliki that the groups would complement the State Government’s efforts in ensuring security and traffic flow in the market.
Nwome said that the constitution of the taskforces became necessary because of the increase in human and vehicular movement in the market. “We constituted the taskforce to ensure the free flow traffic and people in the market.
“While many are shopping and engaging in social activities, some miscreants use the opportunity to do some ungodly acts like stealing, burning of market and other vices.
“With the taskforce in place, some will be controlling the traffic while other will keep vigil over the market to forestall any avoidable misfortune.
“I commend the State Government, the police and other security agencies for their efforts in ensuring the safety of people and the market.”
Nwome said that the taskforce would also ensure that traders did not use their wares to block roads in the market.
A civil servant shopping in the market, Mrs Veronica Nweke, commended the leadership of the market for constituting the taskforce.
“I want to thank them for providing this taskforce because they have helped to reduce the go-slow that is always in this market.
“Before now, it will take you more than 20 minutes to move from one end of the market to another because of wheel barrow pushers and traders who will use their goods to block the road,’’ she said.
A trader, Mr Aloy Onwuka, described the introduction of the taskforce as a good idea but lamented that the taskforce was preventing traders from displaying their goods.
“Usually during festive periods , l use to bring out all my goods for my customers to easily see and make a choice but now l only display some to avoid being levied for blocking the road,’’ he said.
