Woman Leader Wants Review Of Bail Laws
A woman leader and
social commentator, Mrs Kelechi Akpelu, has called for the review of the law on bail to include women acting as surety for suspects and accused persons.
Mrs Akpelu, who stated this in Port Harcourt at the weekend called for equality between men and women in all facets of life.
She said the iniquitous inequality existing between women and men was against the fundamental rights of the individual especially as entrenched in the constitution.
The woman leader pointed out that in Lagos women could take accused persons on bail and noted that it was proper for obsolete laws to be reviewed to give way for the laws that suit the contemporary times.
She explained that before now, married women could not own properties but today the contemporary laws allow married women to own properties.
Mrs Akpelu said the right to freedom from discrimination was a constitutional provision which ought not to suffer derogation.
According to her, the constitution is the grund norm and any other law that is inconsistent with the constitution is to the extent of such inconsistency null and void.
She said it was time for action and not time to pay lip service to gender equality.
Mrs Akpelu said since women had all that men could, it was only proper that they were accorded all the respect that accrued to men.
