Director Urges Establishment Of Olympic Study Centre
The Director of Sports,
Lagos State University (LASU), Clement Fasan, has called for establishment of an Olympic study centre in the country to develop the capacity of athletes.
Fasan, who is also a member of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), told newsmen in Lagos that the establishment would enable athletes to imbibe the Olympic culture.
He said that he would submit a proposal to that effect at the next meeting of the NOC in April.
He blamed the failure of the country in previous Olympic Games on lack of technical knowhow.
“The country’s unimpressive outing at the London Games can be attributed to lack of in-depth knowledge of the competition.
“There is need for us as a people to imbibe a procedural kind of knowledge acquisition as against the use of “fire brigade” approach,” he said.
Fasan urged relevant authorities to desist from the usual last minute preparation of athletes for sports fiestas.
“Most countries that are doing well at the Games, have their athletes trained ahead of the competition unlike the situation here,” he said.
He regretted that in spite of participating in various editions, Nigeria had yet to establish an Olympic study centre.
Fasan called on the private sector to assist the committee to build such a centre.
