Counsel Faults Use Of Touts At Road Junctions
A Port Harcourt-based
lawyer and human rights crusader, Endurance Akpelu Esq, has faulted the use of touts to enforce road traffic laws in Rivers State.
Barr. Akpelu, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt, last Monday, described the scenario as worrisome.
The Port Harcourt lawyer expressed regrets that touts were increasingly feasting on motorists to earn their livelihood on a daily basis.
He warned the police who were colluding with the touts to desist from it or be ready to face prosecution.
Barr. Akpelu described as illegality, a situation where somebody not authorised by the law was carrying out a particular act.
He said the ugly situation was breeding a lot of touts at road traffic junctions in the state.
According to him, “the unemployed youths have taken liberty for licence to punish motorists at road traffic junctions on the flimsiest excuse.
He said the touts collect toll and share same with traffic wardens.
Barr. Akpelu warned that the illegality should not be allowed to continue as it was dragging the image of the state to the mud.
He said only the police, Road Safety and TIMARIV were vested with the power to deal with traffic offences and warned all those impersonating to desist from it or face prosecution.
