The Chairman of the
Medical Laboratory Scientists Association in Enugu State, Mr Chinenye Nwaekpe, has called for the retraining of laboratory scientists on new cancer screening and test technologies.
Nwaekpe, said in an interview in Enugu last Wednesday, said that such training would make the detection of the disease easier.
“There should be opportunity for overseas training for laboratory scientists involved in cancer detection so that with the state-of- the -art equipment, we will be able to control and manage the disease. The government should encouraged further specialisation on cancer detection so that more people will be trained on molecular biology and other areas necessary for proper cancer detection,” he said.
He said that with regular training in new technologies, the laboratory technologists would be able to diagnose the disease properly and early in patients.
The chairman called for increased awareness on cancer so that people would know how to prevent, detect and manage it to reduce the number of cancer-related deaths.
Nwaekpe also advocated for better equipped cancer screening centres in the country to help the less privileged in detecting the disease early.
He called on government and philanthropists to partner in creating more screening centres as this would go a long way to reduce the prevalence of the disease in the country.
