The Abia State
Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs Ngozi Uduma has urged Nigerians to be more cautious and avoid practices that could cause fire outbreak during the harmattan period.
Uduma who spoke in an interview in Umuahia, last Thursday said that the harmattan season was a period when fire outbreak could easily occur and get out of control due to the dry atmosphere.
According to her, there is the need for everyone to exercise caution while handling any inflammable material.
“People who indulge in smoking should always dispose their cigarette butts properly and use lighters instead of matches for lighting their cigarettes. “Also things such as petrol, kerosene and cooking gas should be stored properly to avoid leakage, which could put lives and properties in danger,” she said.
Uduma said that faulty electrical appliances and fittings at home or in the workplace should be promptly repaired or replaced.
“Individuals should endeavour to acquire fire extinguishers for their homes, workplaces and vehicles. “Organisations and groups should also organise regular safety workshops for their employees and members,” she said.
Uduma advised Nigerians to always switch off electrical appliances, either at home or in the workplace, when they were not in use.
