Legislator Gives Scholarship To 60 Undergraduates
The lawmaker representing
Njikoka 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Valentine Ayika (PDP), on Sunday, distributed N3 million cash to beneficiaries of his scholarship scheme for 2014.
Ayika made the presentation in Abagana, Njikoka local government area of Anambra, to 60 students under the scheme drawn from three communities in the Njikoka 1 constituency.
The students received N50,000 each. He said that the essence was to alleviate the plight of parents and help youths to acquire quality education.
Ayika urged the beneficiaries to be serious in their studies as any of them that was found wanting would be dropped from the scheme.
The legislator also presented three American-manufactured school buses for the conveyance of secondary school students in Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia federal constituency, free of charge.
“What concerns one local government concerns the other, and besides, this bus will ply the three local governments to take students to school. “We have empowered them to take all students from the three local governments to their schools, without charges. It is now for the students to cut their onions very well,” he said
Ayika said the gesture would reduce for students, the hardship of trekking far distances, which might form a distraction to their education. He said such stress might induce poor academic performance.
The lawmaker said that the extension of the academic gesture to the sister local governments was in the spirit of living in oneness and to promote love and unity in the state.
He also inaugurated a committee to oversee a football competition among the three local governments.
The chairman of the occasion, Prof. Pita Ejiofor, who was a former Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, commended the lawmaker for the novel initiatives and urged other lawmakers to emulate Ayika.
