Bishop Urges Attitudinal Change Among Politicians
The Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Anthony Obinna, has called for attitudinal change and selfless service among Nigerian politicians, to move the country forward.
He said if Nigeria must move forward in terms of development, those who held political offices must be willing to play politics of selfless service.
Obinna made the appeal in an interview recently in Owerri while commenting on the country’s centenary scheduled to be marked in 2014.
He said it was a matter of regret that after 100 years of amalgamation, the country could not boast of a steady power supply and other social amenities for its citizenry.
According to him, corruption has eaten deeply into both public and private sectors in the country, adding that it is the greatest challenge facing the country.
“Our public and private sectors are all corrupt and if nothing is done urgently to save the situation, the country cannot develop. ‘’The country needs more devoted and committed leaders at all level of governments as a way to step forward. “We need selfless leaders with full commitment to the problems of the nation and not selfish politicians,” he said.
He called for the full implementation of the rule of law and blamed the National Assembly and the Presidency for not prosecuting some politicians for their gross misconduct.
Obinna decried the level of insecurity in Nigeria, saying that some of the security challenges were politically motivated.
He called for unity in diversity as a way out, adding that a non united country could not move forward and commended President Goodluck Jonathan for some of his policies that had added value to Nigeria.
