Association Blames Touts, Extortions For Road Mishap
Nigeria Lorry Drivers’
Association (NILODA), on Monday attributed many accidents on major roads in South-East and South-South zones to the activities of touts that intended to extort money from motorists.
The Chairman of NILODA, Anambra Chapter, Mr Rogers Nebuwa, said in Onitsha, Anambra State that in the event of touts forcing their way on unsuspecting motorists, such motorists had most times veered off the road and crashes into nearby objects.
“He said in South-East, we have many touts disturbing on the Federal Highways and state roads; just like in Imo State, River State and Delta State. “In this Anambra State, we wrote to the commissioner for transport, because most of the problems we have are from the parks and markets.
“We wrote to the commissioner telling him that these people disturbing, these touts are the Boko Haram of Igbo. “And these are the people spoiling the image of the state government and the good work that the governor is doing in the state.’’
The chairman said that the development had already given the zones a negative image especially when one crossed over the River Niger.
He noted that most people passing-by, even when it was glaring to them that what the touts were doing was wrong, would not bother to intervene in the issue.
He said that the government and the police should rise up to the occasion in order to checkmate the development especially in major cities within the zones, he added.
